Rs. 10.3 m fish breeding centre to be set up

A fish breeding centre to ensure quality fish breeding and to enhance the export of sea food will be set up shortly. The foundation stone was laid on January 1 by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Felix Perera to build a fish breading centre at the Modera Fisheries Corporation at a cost of Rs. 10.3 million, that will ensure breeding and exporting of best quality fish.

According to the Minister, a monthly tax of Rs. 100,000 has to be paid by the four companies registered with the centre, the Tropic Fisheries Company, Global Fisheries Company, Slimline Company and Sebu Deep Sea Fisheries Company. The objectives of this centre are to export high-quality fish of all types, to harvest fish and generate employment opportunities.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries Neomal Perera, Secretary to the Fisheries Ministry J. P. Piyasena and Chairman, Fisheries Corporation Asanga Abeygunawardena were also present on this occasion.
