Sangakkara (96) pilots MAS Kandurata to victory

CRICKET: Sri Lanka's vice captain Kumar Sangakkara hit a brilliant 96 to spearhead MAS Kandurata Eleven to an emphatic 192 run victory over the E Wis Basnahira North Eleven in their 'Five Elevens' Inter Provincial limited overs cricket tournament match played at the R. Premadasa Stadium under lights yesterday.

Left hander Sangakkara followed up his century in the previous game with another tremendous batting performance to help his side post a formidable 296 runs after having won the toss and elected to bat first. E. Wis Basnahira North in reply never looked like making a match of it as they folded up for just 104 runs from 26.3 overs.

Man of the match Sangakkara played the sheet anchor role while collecting his runs from just 84 deliveries with the help of two sixes and half a dozen of boundaries. Together with opener Tharanga Paranavithana they really took the game away from E Wis Basnahira North by posting a third wicket partnership of 118 runs.

Paranavithana hit a fluent 75 from 114 deliveries with the aid of five boundaries. Chamara Kapugedera joined Sangakkara and the pair further consolidated their position with a fourth wicket stand of 80 runs from just ten overs. Kapugedera really went after the E Wis Basnahira North bowling by hoisting one six and four boundaries during his 47 ball knock.

E. Wis Basnahira North in their run chase lost wickets at regular intervals against some good hostile bowling from Akalanka Ganegama, Kaushalya Weeraratne and Thilina Thushara Mirando. In fact they were virtually out of the game by the tenth over of the innings having lost half of their side for a mere 40 runs.

Dhanuka Pathirana (20) and Gayan Wijekoon (19) made useful contributions to add some respectability to the E Wis Basnahira North total but the extras was the highest scorer with 21. Mirando snapped up three wickets while Ganegama and Weeraratne had two wickets each.
