Milan - match bag of 10 wickets for 89

CRICKET: Left arm spinner Milan Fernando took a match bag of ten wickets for 89 as S. Thomas' College took major honours in their inter school cricket tournament match against Nalanda College which ended in a draw at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Fernando captured four wickets for 68 following his six wicket haul in the first innings and also passed the fifty wicket mark for the current season.

Nalanda: 151 and 275 for 9 (A. Priyanjana 54, P. Perera 51, D. Munaweera 47, C. de Silva 38, M. Fernando 4 for 68, M. Saleem 3 for 15, N. Ghani 2 for 31).

S. Thomas': 154 (M. Saleem 40, T. Nugawela 24, A. Atapattu 5 for 32, D. Munaweera 2 for 9).

Geeth Kumara - twin fifties

Geeth Kumara scored twin fifties and took a five wicket haul as Thurstan College took major honours in their inter school cricket tournament match against D. S. Senanayake College which ended in a draw at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday.

Thurstan: 231 and 162 for 6 (B. Samarawickrema 52 n.o, G. Kumara 51, N. Mudalige 2 for 21).

D. S. Senanayake: 168 (K. Suriyarachchi 43, N. Pathirana 21, G. Kumara 5 for 27).

Zahira in innings win

Zahira College routed C. W. W. Kannangara MMV outright by an innings and 187 runs in their inter school cricket tournament match concluded at Maradana yesterday.

Zahira: 368 for 6 decl. C. W. W. Kannangara MMV: 79 (G. Navaratne 27, M. Fazleel 5 for 26, M. Wazeem 2 for 32, M. Rizan 2 for 9) and 102 (M. Hamid 44, I. Ghouse 5 for 26, M. Nafeez 3 for 12).

Ranganath and Udara steal the limelight

Ananda duo, skipper Ranganath Wijetunga and Udara Pieris stole the limelight in their drawn school cricket encounter against St.Peter's ended at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Wijetunga who struck a fluent 64 in the first innings followed up with another unbeaten 66 in the second innings in addition to his 4 for 40 in the Peterite innings. Pieris too helped the Anandians with a hard hit 65 and 37 in the second innings.

Ananda 305 for 8 declared. (R. Wijetunga 64, U.Pieris 65, S. Wijesuriya 42, S. Nanayakkara 44,) and 184 for 6 U. Jayasundera 43, P. Seneviratne 28, R. Wijetunga 66 n.o, U. Pieris 37, Vinodh Perera 3 for 37).

Major honours for Cambrians

Prince of Wales College has to be satisfied with a first innings lead in their inter-school under twenty division one Cricket Tournament match against Isipathana Vidyalaya which ended in a draw at Moratuwa and played for the Lemonade Trophy.

Homesten resuming at 166 for 8 declared at 239 for 9 with Lahiru Sri Lakmal Scoring an unbeaten 51 runs. Lilan Fernando captured 7 for 87. In reply visitors put up a poor show and bowled out for 127 runs with Sanka Peiris taking 4 for 26. Following on Isipathana were 74 for 5 when bad light stopped play.

Prince of Wales (overnight 166/8) - 239 for 9 declared - Lahiru Sri Lakmal 51 n/o, Lilan Fernando 7/87.

Isipathana 127 (Shiral Kumara 30, Ifran Ismail 30, Thivanka Ranasinghe 25, Sanka Peiris 4/26, Chamath Kariyawasam 2/41, Chamesh Fernando 2/14 and 74/5 - (Hirantha Silva 20, Chamath Kariyawasam 2/30, Sanka Peiris 2/9).

Rain a spoiler

The Schools Lemonade Trophy cricket tournament match between Trinity College and Wesley College was called off without a ball being bolled on the scored at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Heavy rain during the day put paid to any chances of play being resumed.

Highlight of the match was a superlative knock of 85 in only 67 bolls with 10 fours and 4 sixes by Sachith Pathirana who tare into Wesley attack with vengeance. He pit on 115 for the second wicket with Wasitha Munasinghe (33). He was given out caught at the wicket off the bowling of spinner R. Suriyakumara

Trinity College 254 all out in 56.1 over (Sachith Pathirana 85, Wasika Munasinghe 33, Kithmal Whimalaweera 36, R. Bandara R. Perera 27, R. Sooriyakumara 3 for 70, Ashan Fonseka 3 for 15, T. R. Abeysekera 2 for 16).

Wesley College 55 for 2 with in 16 overs (S. P. Siriratne 16, not out (R. Rupasinghe 12, R. S. G. Peris 20 not out).
