Mobitel ties up with Dept. of Immigration and Emigration

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, recently entered into a joint collaboration with the Department of Immigration and Emigration to produce embarkation/disembarkation cards for 2008.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration handles the arrivals and departures of more than six million sea and air passengers annually. In recognition of their exceptional performance, the department has been awarded the coveted first place at the National Productivity Awards in 2006.

The embarkation/disembarkation card will employ a new format which is designed to make computerisation and collection of information trouble free. This card plays a major role in containing the details of passengers, and is of importance not only to the Immigration Department, but also to the Tourist Board and to the Department of Census and Statistics as well. With this upgrade it is possible to enhance the quality of information gathered from these cards, which in turn will be used productively to develop the tourism industry.

Controller General, Department of Immigration and Emigration P. B. Abeykoon said, "This is a historic moment for the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, as it is the first time that this card is to be done in partnership with an external organisation. We are indeed happy to join hands with Mobitel, the National Mobile Service Provider, which we consider as a move that will strengthen our organisation greatly.

CEO of Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Suren J. Amarasekera, said "We are honoured to have entered into this partnership. Being the National Mobile Service Provider, we at Mobitel strive to extend our fullest co-operation in enhancing the Border Control System, thus promoting a positive national endeavour.

The embarkation/disembarkation card is the first document that a visitor is exposed to when travelling into the country, and should reflect high quality and standards which will positively reflect on the image of Sri Lanka in the international arena."
