India’s inflation -13-year high
The
rate of inflation in India has galloped to a 13-year high to 11.05 per
cent for the week ended June 7, confounding the worst fears of the
United Progressive Alliance Government as general elections loom, the
Hindu reported yesterday.
28 Lankan fishers held in India
The
Indian Coast Guard on Friday arrested 28 Sri Lankan fishermen, who
allegedly entered the Indian waters without valid documents, about 65
nautical miles south east off Kanyakumari. Official sources said six
mechanised boats were also seized.
Four Tigers killed
Four
LTTE terrorists were killed when troops launched an attack in the
general area, Puwarasikulam in Vavuniya last morning. Troops launched an
effective fire on observing a terrorist bunker and hut in them. Three
LTTE terrorists were reported killed and two wounded when the SLA
launched ground attacks on the Mannar front.
Russia to help in oil exploration
Russia
has expressed an interest to assist Sri Lanka in exploring oil and gas
following bilateral discussions between the two countries. Foreign
Ministry sources said that Russia had also reaffirmed its commitment to
Sri Lanka both economically and in relation to its security.
Top Indian delegation for talks
A
high level Indian delegation, comprising Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar
Menon, National Security Adviser M. K. Narayanan and Defence Secretary
Sri Vijay Singh were in Colombo for talks with the government on the
country’s situation, the upcoming SAARC Summit in Sri Lanka and the
safety of the delegates. Indian High Commission sources said the
delegation was here to discuss the SAARC Summit scheduled to open on
August 1 in Colombo.
Prof. Edirisinghe off to Korea for Buddhist confab
Prof. Daya Edirisinghe, senior professor of philosophy, University of
Kelaniya left for the Republic of Korea last Thursday to attend the
international conference on “World Peace and Buddhism” at Okchon in
Chollanamdo province. Prof. Edirisinghe who has earlier published many
books on Korean Buddhism in Sinhala, English and Korean languages.
He was a student of the Seoul National University and the Dongguk
University in Seoul, Korea. At present he is the Vice President of Sri
Lanka - Republic of Korea Association.

The 48th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Library Association
will be held on June 25, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute
Auditorium, Independence Square, Colombo 07.
The Chief Guest will be Prof. Sumanapala Galmangoda, Director of the
Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. The inaugural
session and awards ceremony will commence at 9.00 a.m. followed by the
AGM at 11.00 a.m.
