Nanotechnology - a new way to develop industries
By Manjari Peiris
Technology is important to make wealth. To enable that we need
skilled individuals, said Prof. Ravi Silva, Director, Advanced
Technology Institute, University of Surrey, UK.
He was addressing a workshop on Exploring Opportunities in
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology organised by the Postgraduate Institute
of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya and the Institute of
Engineers, Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the National Science
Foundation.
Prof. Silva said Nanotechnology is a new way of making things and it
enables improving a large sector such as food, water, medicine, energy.
It is capable of reducing sugar, carbohydrate and fat in one’s body.
“If we are to emerge from poverty, we should develop technology. The
gap between the rich and poor is due to the technology gap.
We will be able to develop nanotechnology in our country. A BOI
public-private company is being set up in Homagama. Such projects will
help to develop the country,” he said. |
