Kandy rout Army - 53/0

RUGBY: Defending Caltex Rugby League Champions Kandy SC scored a good 53 points (4 goals, 5 tries) to nil win over Sri Lanka Army in their Caltex League second round rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Kandy led 24-0.

Kandy played a make shift side bloodying the team with some inexperience youngsters who did well despite the rugged opposition.

Kandy outplayed the soldiers in all departments of the game.

Kandy opened scoring in the 8th minute when centre Pradeep Liyanage scored off a line out and full back Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points. Kandy surged ahead further when prop Erande Swarnatillake scored off a forwards rush and Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points.

Two more tries by flanker Sean Wijesinghe and scrum-half Krishantha Rajapakse both going unconverted saw Kandy lead 24-0 at lemons.

Kandy continued their scoring spree and in the 3rd minute winger Kusal Rankothge fared the Army defence to score by the corner flag which went an unconverted. Kandy led 29-0.

In the 17th minute of second half it was that young Krishantha Rajapakse who sliced his way to score mid right. Erande Weerakoddy added the extra points. Kandy led 36-0.

In the 20th minute Kandy’s full-back Erande Weerakoddy collected a kick ahead mid-field and punted ahead ran 40 metres collected the ball and touched down but failed to add the extra points. Kandy led 41-0. Two more tries by Antonian Krishantha Rajapakse and Kusal Rankothge with one of them being goalled by Erande Weerakoddy saw Kandy Sports Club emerge as comfortable winners.
