Govt to develop KKS cement factory

The Kankesanthurai cement factory will not be given over to local or foreign private investors. It will be developed as a State venture, said State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry Secretary Dr. Willie Gamage.

The KKS cement factory is a huge enterprise operated largely with raw materials especially clinker deposits in the Jaffna peninsula. Many foreign companies have shown a keen interest in its redevelopment, the Secretary said.

It was the biggest cement factory in the country which successfully met over 50 percent of the domestic cement requirements before the emergence of LTTE terror.

The Secretary said the clinker resources in the peninsula should be exploited systematically without causing damage to the ground.

He said that the factory could also launch a venture for packaging cement. The expansion of the KKS cement factory could help boost the country's development, he said.
