Major sports events to boost Lanka's global image

The Government will promote major sports events to boost the country's economy and its global image.

This would help solve a wide range of issues and accelerate economic development. Major sports events will also help boost tourism, improve infrastructure, organisational capacity and media coverage as well, a Finance Ministry spokesman told the Sunday Observer.

In the backdrop of this comprehensive policy regime, 2011 could lay the foundation for such development goals.

Towards this end internationally accepted stadia and other sports related infrastructure have been developed at provincial and national level to promote a sport based economy, he said.

The spokesman said that international level sports related professionals such as trainers, coaches, umpires and physiotherapists would also be a valuable asset. He said the achievements in sports would have a considerable bearing on national prestige and morale.
