Providence saves woman from robbery

Providence saved a woman from losing a bag containing Rs 7 lakhs when two men waiting in ambush near the hotel where she was staying snatched the bag and fled when she returned to her hotel.

The incident took place when she alighted from the three wheeler along with others who accompanied her to the bank, the Police Media Spokesman SP, Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.

According to the police the people in the hotel who witnessed the incident chased after the robbers and recovered the bag containing cash Rs. 700,000 while the suspect escaped.

Police have launched an investigation to arrest the suspect who escaped.

Both suspects are soldiers, police said.

The incident took place on Friday around 12.30 p.m. The television crew from Jaya Mawatha Bellanwila, Boralasgamauwa had gone to Matale to shoot a film and had checked in to a popular hotel at Matale.

The woman along with others had gone to the Bank in the Matale town to withdraw the money.

Police are conducting investigations to ascertain whether a bank employee or any one else had tipped off the robbers when the cash was taken to the hotel.

The Matale Crime branch is also conducting further investigations.
