Eight new meet records on the second day

Another eight new meet records were established on the second day of the 23rd National Youth Sports Festival being held at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex in Diyagama .

Unlike the gloomy opening day, it was a sunny and bright morning here at Diyagama, and airwomen W.T.K. Fernando who represents Kalutara district made it more brighter when she bettered her own meet record in women's shot put when she landed the iron ball at a distance of 13.11 metres to start the day.

In the very next event M. Dissanayake of Urban Youth was seen airborne to a height of 2.09 metres which exceeded the previous best height in the meet , that from K.K.D.N.N. Kumara last year.

Puttalam district collected more than another gold for their district by registering the first meet record for them when they finished the under-20 boys' 4 x 400 metres relay in 42.83 seconds.

The second meet record for Matara district was a collective effort from its 4 x 400 relay team. They finished the over 20 men's relay in 42.45 seconds to erase the two year old previous record.

M.D. Dilrukshi had her share in the record book for Gampaha district when she leapt a distance of 5.56 metres in the under-20 girls long jump. In the high jump event of the same age category, H.M.N.M. Siriwardana of Anuradhapura district secured a gold medal and surpassed her own meet record by rising a height of 1.71 metres.

Another new meet record for Kalutara district was entered when S G C Wijesena leapt a distance of 14.5 meters in under 20 boys triple jump.

1. The gold medal sack got heavier with a and a new meet record for last year overall champions, Ratnapura district when H.L.N.D. Lekamge landed her sphere 46.43 metres away.

Boy's under-20 final

High jump: 1. M. Dissanayake (2.09 m), 2. H.N.M.H. Danuka (1.90 m), 3. W. Rohitha Mithun (1.87 m).

4 x 100 metres relay: 1. Puttlam district, 2. Galle district, 3. Colombo district.

Discus throw: 1. D.S. Sumanaweera (38.42 m), 2. G.S. Lekamge (36.80 m), 3. Z.T.M. Asik (36.78 m).

110 metres hurdles: 1. A.I. Nilaweera (15.06), 2. A.L.A.I. Rathnasena (15.09), 3. A.A.S.S. Amarathunga (15.11).

Men's over-20 final events

Javelin throw: 1. E.G. Ruwan Chaturanga (62.65 m), 2. R.M.S.J. Ranasinghe (60.13 m), 3. L.H.N.P.D. Silva (59.50 m).

110 metres hurdles: 1. I. Abeynayaka (15.20), 2. D.R.A. Indrapala (15.38), 3. P.H.L. Chanaka (15.58).

1,500 metres: 1. M.H.P.K. Fernando (4:04.42), 2. G.M.S.R. Wijewickckrama (4: 05.16), 3. T.S. Dammika (4:06.86).

Girls' under-20 events

5,000 metres race walk: 1. P.B. Gayani (28:27.76), 2. P.P.A. Jayarukshika (30:28.91), 3. S.P.M. Navoda (31:06.65).

Discus throw: 1. A.W.D. Chamali (32.62 m), 2. W.D.M.R. Priyadarshani (32.42 m), 3. H.A.H. Erandi (28.68 m).

4 x 100 metres: 1. Kegalla district, 2. Ratnapura district, 3. Puttlam district.

High jump: 1. H.M.N.M. Siriwardena (1.71 m), 2. K.G.I. Hemamali (1.61m), 3. M.D. Priyadarshani (1.58 m).

100 metres hurdles: 1. M.D. Priyadarshani (15.56), 2. L.D.N.G. Jayathilaka (15.84), 3. C.D. Shashikala (18.44).

Women's over-20 events

Long jump: 1. R.W.I. Maduwanthi (5.78 m), 2. S.M.S.N. Thennakoon (5.73 m), 3. M.G.S. Kawshalya (5.57 m).

Shot put:1. W.T.K. Fernando (13.11 m), 2. W.M.S.K. Weerasekara (11.77 m), 3. S.D.C.N. Kumari (10.74 m).

100 metres hurdles: 1. D.A.H. Wijesinghe (14.85), 2. D.H.D. Weerasekara (16.31), 3. R.H.N. Nisansala (16.92).

Urban youth excel

Urban youth sports men and women won seven championships in team events while Gampaha , Kurunegala and Baticaloa have won two championships. Kegalla, Kalutara and Anuradhapura have secured one championship each.

Tug of war - men's: 1. Gampaha district, 2. Galle district, 3. Kurunegala district.

Carom - men's single: Urban youth (I.S. Kannangara), Kurunegala district (A.C.M. Aslam), 3. Badulla district (T.U.S. Fernando).

Carom - men's doubles: Urban youth (I.S. Kannnangara, L.C. Jeewan), Colombo district (W.R.L.N. Chaturanga, K.S. Sufeera)

Kurunegala district (A.C.M. Aslam, D.N. Wijayasinghe).

Men's cricket: 1. Kegalla district, 2. Kurunegala district, 3. Trincomalee district.

Men's basketball: 1. Kurunegala district, 2. Batticaloa district, 3. Galle district

Men's football: 1. Badulla district, 2. Gampaha district. 3. Ratnapura district.

Men's elle: 1. Urban youth, 2. Gampaha district, 3. Puttlam district.

Men's volleyball: 1. Kalutara district, 2. Puttlam district, 3. Gmapaha district.

Men's netball: 1. Urban Youth, 2. Ratnapura district, 3. Kegalla district.

Men's kabadi: 1. Batticaloa district, 2. Vavuniya district, 3. Kegalla district.

Women's tug of war: 1. Urban Youth, 2. Ratnapura district, 3. Gampaha district.

Carrom women's single:

1. Urban Youth (R.A.D.M. Kanchanamala), 2. Ratnapura district (R.K.Y. Rahubaddha), 3. Badulla district (U.S. Dissanayake).
