The ‘Mother of All Shows’ begins
The tradition established will be kept as Sri Lanka’s first ever
award show for schoolboy cricketers, which has produced many champion
Sri Lanka cricketers, is back to continue its role in fostering school
cricket.
The countdown to the 34th Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the
Year 2012 event begins today with the voting for the Most Popular
Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year All-Island and Outstation contests. Sri
Lanka Tele com Mobitel, Sri Lanka’s national mobile communication
network, is the proud sponsor of the prestigious event for the fifth
consecutive year.
The Sunday Observer launched the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the
Year contest in 1979 at a time when there wasn’t a single awards
ceremony to recognise the talents of schoolboy cricketers.
Our initiative has produced fruitful results as the Observer
Schoolboy Cricketer has been instrumental in showcasing some of the top
cricketers that Sri Lanka has ever produced, including Ranjan Madugalle,
Arjuna Ranatunga, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Roshan
Mahanama and Marvan Atapattu.
More and more school cricket awards shows have emerged in recent
times, following our footsteps though the Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy
Cricketer of the Year continues to remain as the ‘Mother of All Shows’.
