Rubber cultivation in non traditional areas
The Ministry of Plantation and the Rubber
Research Institute (RRI) has taken steps to extend rubber
cultivation to non traditional areas in the country, especially in
the dry zone, said Dr V.H.L.Rodrigo of the Adaptive Research Unit of
the RRI. He said that with the liberalised economy, rubber-based
industries are booming in Sri Lanka targeting local and export
markets.

Tourism thrives in the North
The tourism industry in Jaffna is developing at
a rapid pace with the construction of hotels, expansion and
renovation of properties, said Jaffna Chamber of Commerce President
K. Poornachandran. He said the Chamber is supporting the initiatives
undertaken by hoteliers to set up hotels that will boost the tourism
industry in the North. Many hotel operators have shown a keen
interest in building hotels in the North which is fast becoming a
preferred destination for tourists.
