Hassan says open to probe
Mohammed Waheed Hassan, the new President of Maldives, has assured
visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake that he was
willing to face an impartial probe to clear any questions about his
takeover of power.
Blake visited the Maldives to assess the political situation there,
after the former president Mohamed Nasheed alleged he was removed in a
coup. Blake also met Nasheed.
The new government says there was no coup, insisting that Nasheed
stepped down on his own accord.
There has been no move to arrest Nasheed, whose family had left for
Sri Lanka.
