ICAO lauds Lankan standards

It has been revealed that the Sri Lanka has a value of effective implementation of international standards and requirements as high as 86.5 percent following an audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to assess the degree of compliance of the international standards and requirements in the country.

This performance has hepled Sri Lanka to achieve the first place amongst the South Asian States and the fourth place out of 34 States in the Asia Pacific Region, according to the reports published by the ICAO.

It needs to be emphasised that this is a great accomplishment of the country as far as the maintenance of aviation safety standards are concerned where only Republic of Korea, Singapore and Japan have surpassed the performance level attained by Sri Lanka, a Civil Aviation Ministry spokesman told the Sunday Observer.

To correct the remaining shortcomings and implement a flawless aviation safety system, remedial action plan has already been proposed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which has been endorsed by the ICAO, he said.

The new Civil Aviation Act No.14 of 2010 was enacted on November 04, 2010 which repealed the Air Navigation Act No.15 of 1950.

The new Act came into operation with effect from February 4, 2011 through an Order published in the Gazette by Civil Aviation Minister.

The CAA successfully completed all necessary actions with regard to the above process and has currently undertaken to implement the other relevant provisions of the new act, he said.

As a start, action has been taken to appoint the Statutory Services Provider to provide specific aeronautical services as identified in the provisions of the Act and action will progressively be taken to complete the process for the appointment of the other Service Providers as required under the Act.

Steps have also been taken to ratify the Montreal Convention which will regulate the liability of international carriage of persons, luggage or goods performed by an aircraft for reward.
