UNP to appoint office-bearers this week
by Jaliya Wijeyakoon
The United National Party held its Annual Convention in last month
and passed many resolutions to revitalise and strengthen the party
mechanism to regain its lost glory and to form a government at a future
election.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was re-elected leader of the party for six more
years. Other high positions of the party such as Deputy Leader,
Assistant Leader and National Organiser would be announced by the Party
Leader at the next Working Committee meeting to be held on January 10.
In the event of objections by more than one third of the Working
Committee members for anybody for a particular post, an election would
be held for the post and a new person elected with the majority support
of Working Committee members.
Party spokesman, Galle District Parliamentarian Gayantha
Karunathilake told the Sunday Observer that it is most likely that the
same office-bearers would be re-appointed by the Leader for a further
period.Karunathilake said arrangements have already been made to
commence the membership drive from party headquarters tomorrow and to
extend it to all corners of the country through electoral organisers as
soon as possible.
The main Opposition will launch an aggressive campaign against the
Government on all crucial issues affecting the public. The UNP is quite
confident of securing power at a future national election, according to
the party spokesman.
