Infanticide suspect hangs himself

A man committed suicide by hanging at an abandoned house which belonged to him at Kahathuduwa in the Piliyandala police area.

Maddumakaluge Sunil Jayakody, 34, was a suspect in the case in which his one and half-year-old child was beaten to death, the police said.

The Kahathuduwa police on a tip off around 10.30 am yesterday from the villagers visited the house and found him hanging.

The suspect was earlier attached to the Sri Lanka Navy and was later running his own business in Battaramulla.

After an altercation with his wife the suspect was alleged to have beaten his little daughter Melki Saluni who died on admission to the Piliyandala hospital.

The Police said that the suspect was previously married and had fathered three whom he had deserted and lived again with the victim’s mother who was only nineteen years old.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Kahathuduwa police.
