Work on Veyangoda flyover ahead of schedule
Construction work on the Veyangoda flyover is proceeding ahead of
schedule. The design and construction of the Veyangoda railway crossing
flyover was entrusted to Centunion S.A of Spain and Access Engineering
by the Road Development Authority.
Work on the two-lane, 315-metre long, 10.4-metre wide flyover, funded
by the government of Spain, commenced in October last year. "Once
completed, the flyover will help relieve heavy traffic jams at the
Veyangoda railway crossing that has plagued the area for many years.
The daily traffic congestion which causes severe inconvenience to the
people will become a thing of the past", said Project Manager of the
Veyangoda flyover construction project, Jeewaka Dahanayake.
The Veyangoda flyover is also important because it is on the main
access route to the Katunayake International Airport from the Kandy Road
and the Sabaragamuwa Province.
It also links the Industrial Free Trade Zones in Katunayake,
Wathupitiwala and Seethawaka, while providing commuters an access route
to major hospitals and towns such as Gampaha, Negombo and Nittambuwa.
"The flyover will be constructed with minimum damage to public
property and will be the newest addition to the network of roads,
bridges and flyovers that is being built throughout the country," a
spokesman for the company said.
"In addition to the convenience it gives to commuters and traffic,
the unhindered access road to the Northern expressway would lead to the
development of the Veyangoda town and surrounding areas," he said. |
