A group of fishers in Pasikudah in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka discuss their day-to-day problems. The booming tourism industry has sidelined fishers in Pasikudah and now the small fisheries harbour has been shifted to the far end of the picturesque Pasikudah beach while the land they used has been taken over by luxury hotels. New electricity tariff:

Move to save energy

“The high cost of electricity will encourage industries and domestic consumers to shift to renewable energy sources and energy saving options,” said Secretary General of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries(CNCI), Kumar Kandalama. He said that the tariff increase on domestic users will encourage them to reduce electricity waste and use energy-efficient methods.

Gold prices - lowest in two years

The drop in gold prices will affect sales as people fear that the price of a gold sovereign could slump by around Rs. 15,000, jewellery merchants said.Pattakannus (Pvt) Ltd, Chairman and Managing Director S.A. Thiagarajah said that sales of ready-made jewellery will be affected as merchants will restrict sales till the price increases.

New law on oil exploration soon

A new law on oil exploration and a separate entity to regulate upstream petroleum activities will be set up soon, a senior minister said. He said that the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat will be incorporated into an independent regulatory body to prepare government policy on oil exploration and production.

KGLL graphite mine back in operation

The graphite mine at Dodangaslanda operated by Kahatagaha Graphite Lanka Ltd (KGLL) of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is back in operation after two days of disruption to production due to worker unrest. Ministry officials met over120 KGLL employees and resolved the problem amicably,
