Bandara of MSC and Dhammika Harischandra (YMCA) powerlifting champs
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.
Powerlifting in the Hill Capital was given a big revival when the
newly formed Central Province Powerlifting Association conducted its
inaugural meet at the Gymnasium of the University of Peradeniya.
A number of men and women powerlifters participated and some very
impressive performancer were registered.
The President of the Association S.A. Wijewickrema – a former
National Weightlifting coach and the President of the Weightlifting
Federation said that powerlifting was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1978
and a number of meets were held by the Federation in Moratuwa and
Peradeniya by the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation. After a few years
Weightlifting Federation gave up powerlifting which led to the formation
of the present Powerlifting Association.
He said that this revival at least at this late stage is necessary to
make this sport popular in the Central Province.
This championship was declared open by the Deputy President of the
Association and Member Kandy Municipal Council Sarath Wijesinghe said
that the sports deserves a better place and should be made popular
especially among the schools.
This sport must be taken to the schools so that a nursery could be
built. In the past we had some top powerlifters like D.U.M. Jayatillake
and SP Gamini Silva who established national records.
Dammika Harishandra of YMCA – a national weightlifter stamped her
class in this sport too by aggregating a total of 300 kgs, in the 84
plus category. Coming close to her was L.G.A. Vinodani of Municipal
Council who totalled 295 kgs.The highest lift in the men’s category was
