Elections Dept holds Voters’ Day

The Department of Elections yesterday held the annual Voters’ Day, focussing on ‘The right to exercise franchise by eligible citizens’.

The Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya in a statement sad that the need to hold the program annually arose due, mainly, to a lack of awareness among the citizens in having their names enumerated annually in the the electoral register.

Lack of interest in having the names enumerated lead to non-inclusion of names of a considerable number of citizens in the electoral register, he has stated. A citizen, in order to exercise his democratic right, should have his/her name included in the electoral register.

The details should be furnished annually to the respective Grama Niladhari or to special enumerators in certain areas of the Colombo city, as the case may be, during the stipulated time frame (June to July), he has stated.
