ANCL has highest paid journalists - A.H.M. Azwer MP

Journalists employed at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd.,
(ANCL) get the highest salaries in the country, UPFA MP A.H.M. Azwer
said in Parliament Wednesday, joining the Committee Stage Debate of the
Appropriation Bill under the Mass Media and Information Ministry
Financial Head.
MP Azwer further stated that the ANCL spends Rs. 30 million to pay
salaries to 1,908 employees. He said that Lake House spends Rs. 135
million to pay bonuses to the employees.
ANCL employees can avail themselves of an insurance scheme of Rs.
125,000, while the children of employees are provided a free pack of
books for the year.
The employees are given computer related courses as well, he said.
All the newspapers including the Daily News, Dinamina, Sunday
Observer, Silumina, Thinakaran, Sarasaviya earn profits. ANCL
publications cater to people of all walks of life, including the common
man, schoolchildren, youth, sportsmen, artistes, fishermen and farmers.
MP Azwer stated that all these achievements are the result of
successful efforts taken by the Lake House Chairman veteran journalist
Bandula Padmakumara and the Board of Directors.
