G.C.E. A/L examination 2013:

Diligence, hard work brought them success

Education is a treasure. Those who receive it properly will shine in the society and become an invaluable resource for the development of the country. Unfortunately, a large number of children begin their basic education but due to various reasons quit the education midway.

Peace, social integrity and development can be achieved through education. The Sunday Observer talked to four students who won the first place in commerce, science, maths and commerce streams in the island at the recently concluded G.C.E. (A/L) examination - 2013. The collective statement of those students was, at a glance, being hardworking with dedication and enthusiasm for education and keeping the mind relaxed whatever problem that comes their way.

'Enter Law Faculty'

Methsarani Lokuge, student of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Borella who won the first place in the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination in the Arts stream in the island level said that she wants to enter the Law Faculty.

"I did the day-to-day school works perfectly and attended some essential classes. I did past papers too that gave me this victory," Lokuge said.

She said: 'My father is abroad and my mother extended her fullest support and help to win the first place in the G.C.E (A/L) Examination in the Arts stream. As the principal of the school and a responsible mother she did her job well.

'Engineering field'

Aditha Weerasiri Dais

Aditha Weerasiri Dais, student of Richmond College, Galle who won the first place in the island level said that when he checked the results he couldn't believe it and he checked again. He was over the moon after learning that he won the first place in the maths stream in the island level.

Dais hopes to continue his higher studies in the engineering field or physical science. "But I am yet to decide in which stream to commence higher studies." He wants to serve the people of this country. Dais said his parents gave him maximum freedom in his education activities and extended his fullest cooperation.

"The teachers helped me and cleared the doubts I had in the subjects. Their help was also a great strength to me to win the first place. There was nothing to mention as problems during my education period before and after G.C.E. (A/L)", he said.

"In the earlier stage I wanted to become a doctor. I attended both biology and maths classes. Eventually I decided continuing G.C.E. (A/L) in the science stream would leave me in difficulty and instead selected and continued my education in the maths stream", Dais said. "Keep the mind relaxed. All problems and obstacles in this journey of education can be overcome easily. There should be a target in mind to achieve ultimately", says Dais.

'Chartered accountant'

Erandi Kanchana with Rathnavali Principal Hema Jayawardana

Erandi Kanchana who won the first place in the island level from Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha said that she was happy to win the first place. Her future hope is to become a chartered accountant.

She was confident that she would win a good place in the island level but she did not think she can get the first place in the commerce stream in the island level.

Winning first place in the island level in the commerce stream is a difficult task when there are so many options to education in addition to school education. Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya Principal Hema Jayawardana, section teachers and other teachers in the school extended a solid helping hand for her victory, she said.

"When I joined Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya to study for my G.C.E. (A/L) in Commerce Stream an idea emerged in my mind that I should become a chartered accountant. Now I have received an opportunity to make my dream a reality", Kanchana said.

"Dedication and learning without stress were the main philosophy behind my success. All students should follow this concept. They will never go on the wrong path. The target can be achieved easily, she said.

'Become a doctor'

Amaya Mahathanthila from Eheliyagoda Madya Maha Vidyalaya who won the first place in the science stream in the island level said she was happy and was surprised to hear of her results. She had hoped for a good island rank but never expected the first place.

Amaya Mahathanthila

Mahathanthila said that she wants to become a doctor and wants to serve the under-privileged people in the country.

The first place she won in the examination has made it easy for her to make her dream a reality. She said that she won the third place in the island in the G.C.E. (O/L) Examination-2010.

Mahathanthila said that she received the fullest cooperation from family members, parents and school teachers to continue her education without disruption.

"And they were the people behind my success. I refrained from all unwanted activities and concentrated only on education.

"After winning third place in the G.C.E. (O/L) examination I received a good response from various factions. And that encouraged me to select biology for G.C.E. (A/L). I did not place much hope and I was doing what I could. All the time my parents encouraged me."

She also did not fail to thank her family. "I fully concentrated and focused attention only on education.

"My parents provided me the required materials for my education.

They showed me the correct way. So I was able to select a stream independently for G.C.E. (A/L). I did not attend much tuition classes except for some important subjects.

Actually my parents, the Principal of Eheliyagoda Madya Maha Vidyalaya, teachers, class teacher and other teachers can never be thanked enough.

"My teachers who taught me said that my answer scripts in the term tests were of good standard and that I could get an island rank in the G.C.E (A/L) Examination. Their prediction came true. I knew that I would win a good place in the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination. I didn't keep much hope. I studied independently without stress which I believe brought me this victory.

I make a request to all students who are to sit or studying for G.C.E. (O/L), (A/L) examinations to do so without stress. Then the target can be achieved easily."
