Dengue threat in Kurunegala and Puttalam districts

The Ministry of Education in a special circular has instructed principals of all government schools in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts to organise Shramadana Campaigns to destroy mosquito breeding grounds in school premises.

Over 140 school children have fallen prey to Dengue this year. The school principals have been further instructed to take steps to save schoolchildren from all mosquito-related diseases such as Filaria, Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria and Dengue.

The Health Ministry will deploy 120 PHI's next year to visit govt schools regularly to ensure that school premises are kept free from mosquito breeding grounds.

Failure on the part of the school principals to adhere to the circular instructions will result in disciplinary action being taken against them in addition to being prosecuted by the police.

NWP Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera too had summoned school principals to discuss effective ways and means of eradicating the dengue menace in Kurunegala & Puttalam districts.
