Makes less mistakes than England:
Aussies win by 7 wkts
By A.C De Silva
FLASHBACK: The second Test between Australia and England played
between November 26 and December 1 in 1982 at Brisbane will be
remembered more for the number of catches dropped and the record number
of no-balls than any scintillating cricket. So, Australia came on top
and won by 7 wickets. It certainly was not a dull Test match, it was
similar to the first and for long periods of time it appeared that both
captains were scared of winning and when opportunities came their way
they couldn't take advantage of them. In the end, Australia won because
they made less mistakes than England and it's bowling had a greater
depth to it.

Australia’s paceman Geoff Lawson was far ahead a of his
rivals in the Test and had a marvellous bag of 11 for 134
which helped the Aussies to won against England. |
In fact it wouldn't be too unkind to say that only Bob Willis looked
a bowler of Test quality that England had with them.
As things stood, England made 219 and 309 in their two innings and
Australia's opener Kepler Wessels carried Australia's batsmen in their
forward march and made 162 in the first innings. South African born
Wessels who replaced Graem wood for the opening spot wrote himself into
the record books with this century on debut.
He also earned with it yet another distinction of scoring a first

On the way to a magnificent score of 162 in his debut for
Australia in the Brisbane Test Keppler Wessels showed the
way for Australia to pile on the good score of 341 in the
first innings England.

appearance 'ton' against England. Wessels 162 was just three short of
Bannerman's 165 not out against England in the first ever Test in
1876-77, which stands as the highest score by an Aussie batsman on
debut.
Wessels narrowly missed the distinction of carrying the bat. He was
bowled by Willis for 162 and was the last man to be dismissed.
Australian captain Greg Chappell won the toss in Brisbane and put
England to bat, it was the 13th occasion that Greg asked the opposition
to bat and apart from Lamb (72), there was no other plays to give him
the support for them to build a big innings. Lamb looked a fine player.
Botham (40) and Randall (37) threw their wickets away in the first
innings and England were all out for 219 in their first innings.
Then Australia with Wessels leading the way, and Chappell to give him
all the encouragement and lower down the order Bruca Yardley (53) helped
the Aussies to make 341 in their first innings. Willis was the most
impressive bowler for England with 5 for 65 while Botham had 3 for 105.
English batsman's efforts insufficient
Came innings number 2 and though the Englishmen did silghtly better
scoring 309, with Graeme Fowler making 83 and Geoff Miller making 60,
their efforts alone were insufficient to make a match of it and
Australia had the match well grasped in their hands.
For the Aussies, there was their champion opening bowler Lawson who
had a match bag of 11 for 134 while Thomson had 5 for 73 in the England
second innings total of 309.
So finally, the Australians had to make 188 to win, the Aussies made
190 for 3 wickets David Hookes 66 not out and Kim Hughes (39 not out)
involved in a unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 107 runs that made
it easy for the Aussies.
