More teachers for Dhamma schools

The Education Ministry on the instruction of the Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs ministry has appointed 75 teacher assistants to teach Buddhism in government schools in the Kurunegala district.

They were selected from an open competitive examination held by the National Institute of Education (NIE), Maharagama last year.

They would be paid a monthly allowance and have been told to complete their teacher training courses or degree courses early so that they would be absorbed into the Sri Lanka Teachers' Service.

On a directive from President Mahinda Rajapaksa 1,000 Dhamma school teachers have been appointed to government schools countrywide.

The newly appointed teachers should introduce practical religious programs in schools to ensure a morally endowed future generation said Director of Education Kurunegala W.M. Balasooriya at a conference of primary school teachers at the Bingiriya MMV recently.
