More Mahapola schols in future

Minister of Co-operatives and Internal Trade and Kurunegala district parliamentarian Johnston Fernando said that the Mahapola online lottery would be re-introduced to raise funds to offer more scholarships for low-income students of higher educational institutes including Sri Lankan universities.

Compared to previous years, more students are now being admitted to local universities and hence the number of scholarships offered to them has to be increased.

In 2013, 45,000 students of universities and other higher educational institutes were awarded Mahapola scholarships. The number of scholarships would be increased to 47,000 next year, the Minister said.
