England Lions roar - beat Australia by 18 runs

Kim Hughes Scored 89 in Australia's first innings total of 401 for 9 wkts declared. Geoff Boycott – Made 46 in England's second innings score of 356. Graham Yallop (Australia) Made 58 in Australia's first innings total of 401 for 9 wkts declared.

FLASHBACK: Australia was in a dominant position at the start of their Third Test against England at Leeds from July 16 to 21 in 1981, but to everyone's surprise tables changed and England roared and finally pulled through to win the match by 18 runs.

The result was somewhat of a shock to the Aussies and a great triumph for England with their star Ian Botham who was easily the Man of the Match with his wonderful performances. He made 50 in the England first innings score of 174 and following on, Botham made 149 not out in England's second innings total of 356.When Australia batted, it was Botham who caused their disaster.

Dennis Lillee – took 4 for 49 and 3 for 94 in the two innings in the clash against England. Bob Willis had haul of 8 for 43 in the second innings when Australia
scored 111
Terry Alderman Had 3 for 59 and haul of 6 for 135 for Australia

He took 6 for 95 in the Australia first innings score of 401 for 9 wickets. Then Bob Willis look 8 for 43 in the second innings of Australia and the Aussies were shocked to be shot out for 111 runs and that gave England the win.

Batting first, the Aussies made an all pleasing score of 401 runs in their first turn that made them even close their first innings for the fall of nine wickets. Opening batsman Dyson made 102 his maiden test century and his maiden test century has to be seen as the greatest potential gains and with Graeme Wood (34) gave the Aussies a splendid start with 55 for the first wicket.

Ian Botham – a great allrounder. Made 50 and 149 not out. He also took 6 for 95 and 1 for 14 in bowling.

John Dyson – Scored the highest – 102 for Australia in the first innings.

Then there was a second wicket partnership of 94 runs between Dyson and Trevor Chappel (27). Then there was the fine innings of Kim Hughes who made 89 in the first innings. Added contributions from Graham Yallop (58) and Australia seemed to be in a healthy position of 401 for 9 wickets when they closed their first innings. But what a disappointment it turned out for them.

Botham had the good figures of 6 for 95 in the first innings for England and it was Botham again while batting who kept pushing the Englishmen forward with a solid knock of 50 which helped them to make 174 in their first innings - which was somewhat disappointing for them.

Came the second innings for Australia and it turned out to be somewhat of a bad time and the Aussies were all out for 111 runs which was not enough to push the England team. So, Australia had a fight on their hands after their poor showing in the second innings.

Now, the Aussies had a real fight on their hands with a sum total of 512 runs in the two innings.
