Rs. 4,850,000 collected as fines from 637 errant traders

Around 637 traders who were sold contaminated food items during the New Year festive season - 2014 would be prosecuted.

The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Association has conducted raids islandwide to nab traders who exploit consumers by selling low-quality food items that are unfit for consumption.

The Asst. Secretary of Sri Lanka PHIs Association C.S. Muthukuda said that over 1,200 PHIs took part in the raids on shops and food items worth around Rs. 6.1 million have been taken in to custody. Rs. 4,850,000 has been recovered from the errant traders as fines, Sri Lanka PHIs Association Secretary C.S. Muthukuda said.
