The ceremony coincided with the 450th birth anniversary of William
Shakespeare and the launch of the movie 'Hamlet' an outstanding work of
the Bard of Avon.
The Shakespeare commemoration lecture was delivered by a veteran
journalist, media consultant and author Kala Keerthi Edwin Ariyadasa,
who gave an introduction to Shakespeare's family background and his
works and the revolution of stage drama in Sri Lanka. He said hardly a
day passed without a Shakespearean play being staged at least by a small
group of dramatists in some part of the world.
He commended the founder of the Shakespearean Centre Gamini de Silva
who promotes the Shakespearean theatre and theatre-in-education among
children.
It has its influence spread outside Colombo, in the districts such as
Badulla, Hambantota, Bandarawela, Moneragala, Kurunegala, Kandy and
Galle. He said the organisation helps to create an impact on young
people on the values of arts and drama. Gamini de Silva said his movie
'Hamlet' will be opera-based on the concept of melodrama, in an attempt
to overcome tragedies through spiritual awakening.
He also said the actors will try to portray the spirit of
Shakespeare's play.
Awards were given to students who took part in the Shakespearean
Challenge Sri Lanka 2014, for essay, quiz, translation, oratory, best
