UNP May Day rally in Ampara
by Jaliya Wijeyekoon
The United National Party (UNP) will hold its main May Day rally on a
grand scale in Ampara deviating from tradition to hold it in the city.
The National Organiser of the United National Party Daya Gamage told
the Sunday Observer that this was the first time in history that the May
Day rally will be held in the Eastern Province.
May Day is for the workers and peasants and our party has decided to
hold the May Day rally in Ampara to give pride of place to the peasants
in the district who contribute immensely to produce staple food to the
nation.
Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake initiated the Gal
Oya Multi-Purpose Development project and President J.R. Jayewardene's
Mahaveli Diversion Project had been hallmarks in the East for which
people are ever grateful to these leaders.
As a token of gratitude to those leaders and appreciate the
contribution of the people in the Eastern Province the UNP has decided
to hold the main May Day rally in Ampara.
Workers will arrive at the venue in procession from three directions
and a large number is expected from all parts of the country, Gamage
said. |
