One has to justify the whether you are a career diplomat or a political appointee. During my tenure in office I strengthened the relationship between both Sri Lanka and Germany, Sarath Kongahage former ambassador to Germany said at a presentation organised by the Sri Lanka-German Friendship Society held at the Organisation of Professionals Association auditorium, Colombo.

A role of an ambassador does not end witht the termination of his appointment. I have plans to strengthen the relationship further as the institutional framework in place is supportive. Ambassadors should always work for the betterment of both countries. Germany is the most important country in the European Union. As students we remember Germany being a country famous for wars. Germany is an important economic partner for Sri Lanka. Germany sends over 85,000 tourists to Sri Lanka annually. This is an important segment in the country’s tourism sector. It is also the third largest number of tourists from a single country. Trade volume stands at USD 900 million. Germans appreciate our climate, culture, beaches and Ayurveda. Germany is also one of the countries that give us the most technical aid. They also provide skills development through GTZ projects.

I have compiled a comprehensive book containing details of the companies that deal with Germany, its tourists, trade and cultural relations. This should serve as a guide to new ambassador who will take office. I will hand over the office of ambassador with this data base so the new incumbent can use this to further strengthen the relationship between our two countries.

Germany has given us many things in Aeronautics, Mathematics, technical training, Engineering, vocational training, music and the arts. My aim is to prevent wars happening in the European Union and to create a peaceful and stable Europe.

The main area which we have to capture is the hearts and minds of the German people wher culture is concerned. While trying to understand their culture, we must also introduce ours to them. Though my role as an ambassador has ended, my duty has not, till I fade away. My part as a political ambassador has been fulfilled in fostering and enhancing bilateral relations between our great nations.
