LONDONDERRY, (North Ireland) July 2nd 1969: The West Indian
cricketers were all out for 25 in a sensational collapse in their game
against lowly-rated Ireland. West Indies the top ranked team which
included five of the players who helped the West Indies draw with
England in the Test match earlier.
The top scorer for West Indies was fast bowler Grayson Shillingford
with 9 not out. The villain of the rout was the pitch at the tiny town
of Sion Mills near Londonderry.
The then West Indies batsman fresh from perfect pitch at Lord's could
not handle the green and wet wicket, finding batting almost impossible
in the early overs.
Medium pacers Dong Goodwin and Alea O'Riordan moved the West Indian
batsman down, Goodwin taking 5 wickets for 6 runs and O'Riordan 4 for
18. Batting stars Steve Lomacho, Basil Butcher and Clive Lloyd could
muster only four runs between them. Butcher made 2 and Lloyd and Camacho
one each.
West Indian team manager Clyde Walcott in his Test days one of the
World's greatest batsman made one of his rare playing appearances in the
match and scored six. Walcott praised the Irish players full credit for
the magical performance of the Irish.
Ireland passed the West Indies score for the loss of only one wicket
and decided to bat on. In the good old days one-day rules the playing
time was automatically extend and thereby the match was extended to two
innings
