Boosting local sugar production

The Ministry of Sugar Industry Development has taken steps to develop Kantale, Hingurana, Sevanagala and Pelwatta Sugar factories to boost local production up to 40 percent of the annual sugar requirement of the country, by 2020, the Sugar Industry Development Ministry sources said.

Accordingly 27,567 hectares of land belonging to Kantale, Hingurana, Sevanagala and Pelwatta Sugar Industries will be leased out for 99 years to Lanka Sugar Co. (Pvt.) Ltd, the sources said.

The Kantale Sugar factory will be modernised with assistance from the Czech Republic. Blocks of cultivable lands will be allocated to farmers for sugarcane cultivation by entering into contracts with them to purchase sugarcane.
