Munchee sets up factory in Bangladesh

Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) has set up a confectionery manufacturing plant in Bangladesh. It is one of the first Sri Lankan-owned confectionery plants overseas.

The factory 35 km out of Dhaka City in the Gazipur district Sreepur Mauna, had its soft launch recently.

Selecting Bangladesh and the launch of the project was the decision of Chairman Ceylon Biscuits Limited, Mineka Wickramasingha, who during a visit a few years ago with the Foreign Minister Prof. G.L Pieris identified the potential in providing the Bangladeshi consumer a quality product.

The company has invested around US $ 3 million in its initial phase and hopes to invest upto US $ 10 million in expansion programs to strengthen its dominance in the region. The Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister for External Affairs, Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera, senior officers of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury and Group Managing Director Ms. Sheamalee Weerasekera.were also present. The quality and taste of products made at the Bangladesh factory will be the same as that is manufactured in Sri Lanka and exported to almost 55 countries, said Managing Director, Ceylon Biscuits Bangladesh (Pvt) Ltd, Srian de Alwis.
