Match-bag of 13 for 106 and majestic knock of 114
runs in Jubilee Test :
India 'bombed' out by Botham
By A.C. De Silva
Ian Botham in action and he richly earned all Rudos for the
wonderful bowling where he helped England to beat India by
10 wickets. Botham took 6 for 58 in the first innings and
India were out for 242 and then in the 2nd innings he look 7
for 48 and India were out for 149 and England won the
Jubilee Test by 10 wickets. |
Victories over Australia and Pakistan in recent series and a
seemingly low morale stemming from England's touch but unsuccessful bout
with Australia, had raised the level of expectations for an Indian
victory in the Jubilee Test at Bombay.
Botham- the majestic allrounder was just praying for an
England victory in the Test against India an victory came
England's way in the Jubilee Test |
Out goes the Indian captain Gundappa Visvanath – bowled by
England’s Lever for 11 in the India 1st innings score of
242. |
Everybody knows that India’s Ghavri can bowl a either
bouncer and here England’s Taylor, winces away from a really
good one. Taylor, however went on to make 42 in England’s
total of 246 in the first innings. |
However, this was not to be and England beat India by 10 wickets half
and hour after lunch on the fourth day speakes eloquently of the
professional ability of the English team to get up from the floor to
knock India out.
The player who singly made it possible was England and star
all-rounder Ian Botham who richly earned all 'kudos'; significantly from
the assembly of former Indian Test player who praised the effort of Ian
Botham who had the magnificent match figures of 13 for 106 - getting 6
for 58 in the first innings and 7 for 48 in the second innings to
dismiss India for 242 in the first innings and 149 in the second
innings.
Magnificent performance by Botham
It was a magnificent performance by Botham, who really bombed out
India and Botham not only bowled magnificently, but when it came for him
to bat, Botham just hit the Indian bowlers out of sight to make a
magnificent 114 in the England first innings total of 296.
England, with the help of Botham's fine balling, made that fine total
for England and made certain of victory for them before lunch on the
fourth day on that eventful day in Bombay.
India somewhat started the match well and in the first innings
reflected a carefree approach in the first innings with the batsmen
indulging in stroke play and they started well, making 56 for 1 and 102
for 2 when they batted first. The Indian batting in the first innings
reflected a carefree approach with the batsmen indulging in stroke play,
it was a little too much to go on and after Sunil Gavaskar was out for
49, there was Kirmani who carried on to make 40 not out, but there was
not much long enough support from the others and the England team took
the upper hand.
England stumped then recovered
When it came for the England team to bat, they were somewhat troubled
in the early stages of the match when their front line batsmen were out
and five wickets were down for 58. However, this was the stage that the
England batsmen recovered.
Botham came to the picture then and his technique was somewhat in
copy-book and he took control of the situation. Botham mixed forceful
strokes with caution and flicked the ball all round the wicket with
power and precision. Botham (114) and Taylor (43) structured a
partnership of 171 runs that reinstated England in the game. Botham's
score was a knock that was as powerful as it was responsible.
The Indian fielding at this stage was slack and many a catch went a
begging. In fact the Indians at that stage seemed to lack any sense of
purpose or direction and England took the upper hand.
So, England recovered well to make 296 in their first innings.
Ghavri 5/52
In securing 5 wickets for 52 runs in 20.2 overs with 5 maidens,
Ghavri bowled with imagination for India.
He moved the ball both ways but tended to overdo the short-hitched
delivery which was not very effective against the professionals.
When India balled a second time with a deficit of 54 runs (India made
242 runs in the first innings and 149 in the second knock, while England
made 296 in their first turn.)
Came England's turn to bat in their second innings and they had to
make 96 runs to win Gooch (49 not out) and Boycott (43 not out) and with
six extras made 98 for no wickets in their second innings to win the
match.
