Inspection of Colombo eateries to continue
By Carol Aloysius
Food inspectors will visit eateries in Colombo city this week to
ensure customers are not served stale food due to the long New Year
break.
"There are over 2,000 eateries and hundreds of wayside eateries in
the 47 wards in Colombo city. Although our inspectors visited all of
them before the News Year, they will re-visit them after the New Year to
ensure they serve clean food," Chief Public Health Inspector, Colombo
Municipal Council, Lal Kumara told the Sunday Observer.
He said special attention would be paid to storage facilities and
water. "We will check kitchens, refrigerators and cooking utensils as
small restaurant owners tend to store cooked food and leave unwashed
dishes, plates and cooking utensils when they go to their villages to
celebrate the New Year.
"We will also examine left over fruits and vegetables to ensure they
are not spoilt by the time owners return, as eating contaminated food
can lead to bowel problems. All food sold by street vendors will also be
scrutinised," he said. |
