The Government will hold discussions with India and Japan, to
convert the proposed coal-fired power plant in Sampur, from coal to
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), due to pressure on the Government from
energy and environment experts not to go ahead with further
coal-fired power plants, according to a top Environment Ministry
source.
Police yesterday recovered the T56 weapon and five revolvers,
reportedly stolen from the Laggala police station on Thursday (April
14) morning, from a temple premises in Laggala, yesterday (April 16)
morning, Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said. According to
sources, the police found the weapons near the water tank of the
Wellewela,
Former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said divisions in the SLFP
should be eschewed and the party should move forward as a united
entity under its leaders. The former premier said at present the
challenge faced by the SLFP-led UPFA coalition is that all its
leaders should unite, irrespective of differences.
Power crisis:
Countering allegations by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of an
energy crisis, the Public Utilities Commision of Sri Lanka (PUCSL)
says there is an adequate energy supply to the national grid.
Chairman of the national regulator Saliya Mathews stated in a letter
to the CEB that restrictions imposed at Rantambe (49 megawatts) and
the failure of two 250 MVA transformers do not give rise to an
energy crisis.
Although there was a decrease in the number of patients, treated and
admitted to the Accident Service during the New Year festivities
from April 12 – 16, compared to the previous year, organisers of New
Year sports activities which continue even after the Avurudu
celebrations, should also take precautions to minimise risks,
hospital authorities warned.
