members:
The UPFA rebel group, or, ‘Joint Opposition’ as
they call themselves, from the beginning, planned their May Day
rally as a propaganda stunt. The Lalith Athulathmudali stadium at
Kirulapona was chosen as the venue as it offered them many
additional advantages.

This past week has seen these three loud, clear
and magnified. The demands unreasonable; threats worse; and
retaliation, the worst. This cat finds the demands of the so-called
Joint Opposition (JO) silly and laughable, but like black humour,
laughter here is not of the real ha ha kind but overlaid with
malice.
The increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 11%
to 15% on a range of goods and services will affect several sectors
of the economy including retail trade, vehicles, hospitality,
private healthcare and private education. The Sunday Observer spoke
to a range of people from sectors said to be impacted by VAT
increases to get their opinion on how the rising tax burden would
affect their businesses.
