Election candidates as observers at counting centres

The Elections Department is considering allowing candidates as observers at counting centres in addition to party representatives when preferential votes are counted, Elections Department sources said.

Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya held a meeting with representatives of political parties at his office after the provincial council elections.

During this meeting, All Ceylon Muslim Congress Secretary General Y.L.S. Hameed made a request to the Commissioner of Elections to consider allowing representatives of candidates as observers at counting centres when preferential votes are counted, in addition to party representatives.

The Commissioner explained that allowing representatives of candidates is not possible practically, but permitting candidates will be considered, Deputy Commissioner of Elections M.M. Mohammed said.
