A flair for the exotic
When the Yala wildlife sanctuary in the south of
Sri Lanka was founded by the Game Protection Society (now, Wildlife
and Nature Protection Society) in 1894, the first Game Ranger was H
H Engelbrecht. He was an Afrikaaner and a Boer prisoner of war who
was not returned to South Africa because he refused to swear
allegiance to the British monarchy.
