Sri Lanka laid low

E.J. Chatfield – 4 for 66 in Sri Lanka’s 1st innings score of 240.

Ranjan Madugalle – 79 in Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 240. Associated in record stand of 130 runs with acting skipper D.S. de Silva for fifth wicket.

Richard Hadlee – 4 for 34 in Sri Lanka’s 2nd innings score of 93 and before 2 for 47 in Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 240.

FLASHBACK... Sri Lanka hit a bad spot on their tour of New Zealand in February - March 1983 and lost the second Test against New Zealand played at Wellington on March 12, 13, 14 and 15 in 1983 by six wickets. So, it was somewhat depressing for the Sri Lanka team that had Somachandra de Silva as the acting captain.

Not having the services of their stalwarts Duleep Mendis and Roy Dias in the first Test was bad enough and it looked depressing for the acting skipper Somachandra de Silva to go into this test once again without those two fine batsmen.

The first day of this Test was hit by rain and Sri Lanka reached a respectable score of 240 on the second day largely due to a record partnership of 130 between acting skipper Somachandra de Silva (61) and Ranjan Madugalle (79). It was a pathetic sight to see Sri Lankans tumble to 48 for 4 wickets when Somachandra de Silva and Madugalle stemmed the rot with their fighting partnership where they had to weather the storm of New Zealand's fiery pace bowler Richard Hadlee.

The partnership between Somachandra de Silva and Madugalle ended when Madugalle was run out for 79 and a little later Somachandra de Silva was out leg before wicket to New Zealand's Ewan Chatfield, who was the home team's most successful bowler with four scalps.

D.S. De Silva – Acting captain made 61 in Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 240. Associated in record stand of 130 runs for fifth wicket with Madugalle.

Rumesh Ratnayake – had a haul of 4 for 81 in New Zealand’s first innings score of 201.

Vinodhan John – Had haul of 5 for 60 in Kiwi first innings score of 201.

Came day three and Sri Lanka's fast medium bowlers Rumesh Ratnayake and Vinodhan John did a fine job in bowling out the Kiwis for 201. The Lankans had some resistance by New Zealander Lance Cairns who hit up a quickfire 45 towards the end.

Vinodhan John was the most successful Sri Lankan bowler with 5 for 60 and Rumesh Ratnayake had 4 for 81.

Came the second innings of Sri Lanka and its batting hit its depressing depths again and the scoreboard read 12 for 3 wickets, losing the wickets in quick succession on the third evening of the match. Lanka never really recovered and were all out for the pathetic score of 93.

Richard Hadlee had 4 for 34 and Snedden 3 for 21 and Chatfield 3 for 15 and Sri Lanka were all out for 93 in their second innings. So, Sri Lanka finally had only 132 runs in their bag at the end of the second innings.

New Zealand had to make 133 runs for victory. Glen Turner (29) and Bruce Edgar (47) had somewhat of a good kick-start in their second innings with the openers putting on 59 runs in their chase for victory and New Zealand finally reached their winning target losing only four wickets. They made 134 for 4 wickets.
