Charges warrant dismissal:
PSC finds Chief Justice guilty
The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) having
examined the verbal and written evidence against Chief Justice
Shirani Bandaranayake has found her guilty of charges 1, 4 and 5.
The PSC does not find her guilty of charges 2 and 3 due to lack of
sufficient evidence. The committee has further decided that in view
of the very grave nature of the charges. 1, 4 and 5 it will be a
futile exercise to seek evidence to convict her on charges 2 and 3.

700,000 commuters inconvenienced :
Rail strike incurs Rs 10 million loss
Over 700,000 commuters from all parts of the
country were prevented from travelling to the Colombo Fort and
Maradana railway stations due to the rail strike on Friday. The
Railway Department incurred a Rs. 10 million loss following the
24-hour strike launched by members of 10 trade unions of the
Professional Trade Union Alliance (PTUA) of the Department. The
one-day strike stranded at least 70 percent office workers employed
in state and private sector offices in Colombo,

Tourist police stations soon to prevent harassment
The Police Department will set up tourist police
stations in areas where a large number of tourists congregate and
investigate complaints of those holidaying in the country. “Top
priority will be given to tourist-related issues in the near future
due to the tourists influx into the country from Western Europe, UK,
Middle East and India , a senior police officer told the Sunday
Observer.

TNA to hold fresh talks soon
The Tamil National Alliance TNA will hold fresh
talks soon with the Government heeding President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s
request to return to the negotiating table. Parliamentarian M.A.
Sumanthiran told the Sunday Observer that they would take part in

Loudspeakers taboo near GCE (OL) exam centres
The Examinations Department has warned
organisers of functions and other ceremonies to refrain from using
loudspeakers in the vicinity of over 4,000 GCE (OL) examination
centres countrywide as it would disturb, students sitting the
examination from December 11, Tuesday.
