The long walk to Kataragama
Becoming a P?da Y?tra pilgrim is a ‘calling’
which sees thousands leaving everything behind and making the
two-month long marathon trek from Jaffna to Kataragama with nothing
but a bundle of essentials. They experience the homeless life of a
beggar or religious recluse, spending the daylight hours walking and
sleeping under trees and in temples. They seldom know where their
next meal will come from. The sustained act of self-denial is, to
most an intense spiritual opportunity, a deep lessons about the
paradoxes of life.
