OIC in massive timber racket

Two special Police teams yesterday uncovered a large scale timber racket that was being carried out deep in the jungles of Laggala.

The massive timber racket, which amounts to several millions of rupees, was uncovered by the two teams from Walana Crime Division and the Police Headquarters yesterday.

Initial investigations have disclosed that Laggala OIC too has been allegedly involved in the racket, along with some other persons.

On the instructions of the Inspector General of Police, Victor Silva, the two teams despatched to Laggala Police Division yesterday found a massive timber racket in which more than five acres of Ma Oya Forest has completely been cleared.

Police believe that many lorry loads have been despatched over the past couple of months.

A large number of teak, satin and halmilla longs were among the valuable timber seized.
