Golu Birinda and Kolomba Hathey Nona
Namel Malini Arts Circle will go on the boards with the newest
productions of two short plays 'Golu Birinda and Kolomba Hathey Nona'
today at 6.45 p.m. at Namel Malini Punchi Theatre. Namel Weeramuni
directs both.
Golu Birinda is a new production. This was one of Namel's successful
plays, which went on the boards in the nineteen sixties and had a long
run, about two hundred and fifty performances along with the still
popular play, "Naribana" of Dayananda Gunawardena.
Golu Birinda is about a dumb village damsel and of a foolish villager
who marries her after a lot of contemplation with the hope of having a
quiet and peaceful life hoping to avoid shouting and nagging from the
wife. However, as time passes by he confronts a dilemma because of her
dumbness.
Nevertheless, he finds solace through the help of a friend who takes
him to a Kattadiya who enables the wife to speak. This makes the problem
become worse and he in order to escape the plague of his wife's nagging
goes deaf. It is really a beautiful farcical piece of theatre that can
fill you with laughter.
The author of the script is Prof. Wimal Dissanayake. The cast
comprises Malini Weeramuni, Daya Tennakoon, Sanett Dikkumbura and Namel
Weeramuni.
Kolomba Hathey Nona is a subtle comedy based on the upper middle
class. In 1977 when the open economy came into being with a lot of
unorthodox ventures and 'mushroom cultures'. Malini Weeramuni, Visaka
Jayaweera and Namel Weeramuni are part of the cast. |
