Unknown - no longer in the wings
by Mahes Perera
What happens when six young and talented guys reach out to each other
with a common vision - that of hitting the high spots in entertainment?
The result is that a new band is formed and although they struggled to
get an attention-getter name for the band, they finally ended up with
Unknown borrowed from computer lingo!
Ironically they burst into the youth scene when they took part in
Inter-act Club activities, found success and had the opportunity to
perform on stage at the BMICH.
This enthusiastic and rearing-to-go six piece outfit comprises Yenuka
Laknow - vocals/guitar, Kaushika - vocals, Chanuka Shiran - vocals.
Yassas Medagedera - who handles the computer music arrangements and
composes tunes for the group, there's Ravindu Shymal whose world
revolves around rapping and Arosha the bass guitarist.
Students of Mahanama, Dharmapala, President's Colleges and Ashoka
College, the spokesman for the group Yenuka tells us "one year ago when
we performed at the BMICH with other new groups we didn't think that we
would come this far. We recorded two singles for radio Hina Pokuna and
Bisso and the songs are getting considerable airplay on YFM, Sha and
Sirasa FM. We are planning to record videos of the songs.
Apart from that we have completed five songs and intend recording a
CD, but we are looking for a sponsor or a producer who will help us to
achieve our ambition. The themes of our songs are basically love themes
we have no social frames. Ours is hip-hop, R+B and we enjoy the
classics," says Yenuka.
Unknown have taken music instructions from the renowned guitarist of
Wild Fire fame Derek Wickramanayake and all the members say they are
influenced and inspired by the music of Yaani, Mettalica, Guns 'N Roses,
Iron Maiden, Stigmata, Paranoid Earthling to name a few.
"We'd like to thank Thiranjaya Gamlath, Kitsiri Jayasuriya our
teacher in college and ofcourse our parents for patiently tolerating our
sounds whenever we decided to rehearse!" the members of Unknown state in
unison. In time, to borrow a cliche, Unknown will be well known, in our
music scene.
