Peterites remain unbeaten with 18-3 win over Isipathana
by Ranjan Anandappa
RUGBY: St. Peter's dented Isipathana's unbeaten record and maintained
their unbeaten status with an overwhelming 18 points (1 goal, 1 try, 2
penalties) to 3 (1 penalty) win in their much look forward to schools
rugger match played at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
Isipathana who are known for their late fight backs were unable to
find their fluency right from the beginning of the match and were in
total disarray due to the robust play of the Peterites. The Pathana back
division was never allowed to settle down and when ever they won some
possession the Peterites were quick to spoil their moves.
The Peterites played with better coordination and understanding. They
missed two penalties at the initial stages of the match, but came back
storming through a try scored by winger Gerald Canute off a three
quarter move. Centre Harsha Weerakkody converted and the winners led 7-0
at the breather.
On resumption Reza Mubarak put over a neat 45 metre penalty kick to
reduce the gap but that's all Pathana were able to do.
The last year's league champs Peterites put the issue beyond doubt by
collecting 11 more points when Poornaka Delpachitra touched down for an
unconverted try and two penalties were put over by Weerakkody.
