German for school teachers

September 25, 1959- 8.am. Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike inspects a ceremonial guard of honour on board the naval flagship, “Prince Vijaya”. Behind him stands S. L. Samararatne, official Lake House photographer with his Rolleiflex camera. In a strange quirk of fate the Prime Minister meets with his untimely death the very next day at precisely the same time.

The Education Department has officially recognized the German language as an optional subject amongst other foreign languages in public and private schools. To cover the great demand of teachers, the Goethe-Institut has launched a special program to train English teachers to learn German at their premises.

After one year of intensive language training and an introduction to the theory and methodology of teaching German these teachers will be teaching German at their schools.

This training is free of charge for the participants.

German Textbook for tourism purposes

A German textbook with an emphasis on tourism is being written now by some experts who are working at the University of Keleniya and the Goethe-Institute Sri Lanka (the whole project is a joint effort of these two institutions and is totally funded by the Foreign Ministry of Germany).

It will be a textbook which is adapted to Sri Lanka and its special necessities, and depicts scenes which take place in Sri Lanka, so that the learners who want to become tourist guides or hotel managers can deal with authentic situations.

The authors of the book participated in a 2 week seminar in Bangkok, working on these matters together with colleagues from India, Indonesia and Thailand itself. The event was funded by the Federal Ministry of Germany/Tsunami relief.

The book - with fine illustrations is expected to be published by the end of the year. But already in June their will be a Seminar about the already finished chapters of the book - to give the participants who would like to be German teachers or tour guides a good knowledge of German etc and the opportunity to learn how to use this book and to teach the students.

After the seminar the participants will teach in schools and hotels in the Tsunami-Region - free of charge for the pupils (16 to 18 year olds) with the hotel staff in order to familiarize them with the basics of the German Language, already placing emphasis on German for tourism matters at the basic level, in order to enhance their opportunity to get a job in the field of tourism, working in hotels or as a tour guide etc. Schools who would like to participate in this project Can call/write to Goethe-Institut, R.
