Outdated food items seized, traders warned

Health officials of the Municipal Council have destroyed a large quantity of outdated food items which were on sale at retail shops around Colombo's main bus stand and legal action will be taken against the owners of six shops.

In a sudden raid carried out by officials led by the Municipal Council's Food Control Unit a large quantity of outdated cakes, biscuits and other snacks were seized.

Health officials also found watalappan and cakes with fungus, although they were not outdated." Traders were asked to remove such food items on sale.

Legal action will be instituted against these six traders".

A Municipal Council spokesman said all items seized were destroyed by the officials and the traders were warned not to sell such items in the future.

Municipal Council officials conduct frequent raids on food outlets, shops and supermarkets to ensure that quality and hygienic standards on food are maintained for the good of the public.
